3D to 2D

Artist Statement
Throughout the semester I had a tendency to work in all neutral tones, forgoing color even when given the option to use it. It is trend I have notice in my physical work, yet in design, I lean towards colored work. My 3D to 2D project is created from the Map Relief, which is in black and white, and is translated into a more abstracted, colored version. The projects look entirely different from the original, yet both clearly have been inspired by insect wings. I used contrasting warm and cool tones in this new rendition and focused on the movement created from the organic forms from left to right.

My memento was designed around a memory of mine from the fifth grade as the class went to resource. An acquaintance and I were sent to retrieve a forgotten clipboard and were told to hurry to catch up. The other student had gone up the ramp and into the room to fetch the board while I waited at the bottom. When I heard him come out and begin to lock the door, I turned to walk and start making my way back to the class. He, in attempt to catch up to both me and the class, ran down the ramp and slipped on something. He landed on his knees and skid down the remainder of the ramp, skinning his knees to the bone. I remember his pale face, folded skin and the reflection of the ramp clear as day. We screamed for the teacher, but it took a while for her to take us seriously.
What I vividly remember from this time was used to inspire my piece. What stood out to me most was his face and how color had completely drained from it, thus I made it my focal point. It was designed in the shape of a knee cap for his injuries and folded skin was created through liquid latex. The silver triangles and knee cap were both constructed from clay. The silver triangles represent the ramp in abstracted form and were designed to poke and prod the individual as its held, emphasizing how sharp and painful the memory was for me as a child. Clay was also used for its weight, and when the piece is held its heavier than it first appears, just as the memory is for me.
For the memento, I went a direction I was entirely unused to, to push myself beyond what I normally do. I never do work related to anything gory and rarely anything negative that I find difficult to talk about.

Artist Statement

Entering Masked Identity, I had no solid conceptual idea. I knew I was inspired by form-fitted fabric and yarn masks that appear to strangle the individual. I also knew that I desperately wanted to create a bear mask. After careful consideration, I composed an idea in which both would be combined- demonstrating the fear and frustration of day to day life, yet the need to maintain a brave face for
 the world.
In person, both parts of the mask are clearly visible, but through my photography, I chose to focus on the aspect not seen by most people. In my day to day life, people often see me as upbeat, friendly and put together. I am always told that if any one can do it, that I can. Yet most people fail to see the struggles I face, just as they do. Instead of sharing and burdening them with my problems in addition to their own, I withhold them and pull on my strength to help them through theirs. Its a choice I make daily, and for me the right one.
The black yarn mask that strangles the individual who wears it represents those suppressed feelings and thoughts that fail to be set free. When withheld for too long, they begin to suffocate and wear the person raw. Often, we try and hide from these feelings but its always a failed attempt once we turn our backs to the world and reflect on ourselves.
The bear represents the view the world receives. The mask purposely is looking up and is placed on the back of the head, as the individual appears to be positive and happy, but in reality, their head and heart aren't truly in the appearance.
In the photography aspect, I had my model convey what they thought frustration, fear, and defeat would looked like to them in action form. From those shots, I selected the best and placed them within a series, demonstrating the process as one goes through their withheld thoughts. Then reveling the final result- the confusion and overwhelming feelings that can come within the public space without warning. Within it is the symbol of spilled ink, which stands for missed chances- opportunities that can easily be missed while stuck in your head, overwhelmed by everything that should have been said.

Title: Tag
Approximate Dimensions: 3' x 3' x 2"
Medium: Matte Gel Medium, Gesso, Paper, Black Ink, Tracing Paper

Artist Statement
Tag was created from a memory of mine as a child where I had failed to play tag with my shadow and instead tried to play with a bee. The black traveling up the arm represents the moment of impact where and when I was stung. The figure is created from layers of abstracted bee wing shape cutouts, both organic and geometric. Hidden within are also wings made of tracing paper and a gel medium and gesso mix, this gives the close up viewer something new to look at. The piece works both close up and at a distance. Tag was an installation piece with strong directional lighting to create shadows that represented my past attempt to play with my own as Peter Pan had.
